Contestants for the 4th of July Royalty Contest are ambassadors of our community. The men and women who meet the contest requirements represent a cross section of all Ketchikan girls/boys and the competition is fair to all contestants. Any young lady/man who is energetic and enthusiastic about this long standing tradition in our community has a chance to one day reign over Ketchikan’s 4th of July Festivities. The Royalty Contest started in the late 1950’s. There have been contestants from generations of the same families. While you are out selling your tickets you will probably find several of your neighbors and friends participated in this traditional event. The proceeds of the Royalty contest are split between the Lions Club 4th of July Fireworks display and the contestant scholarship winners. As a contestant you will not only have a great time, but also help very special charity and youth groups in our community and help keep the traditional fireworks display going strong! In keeping with tradition, this year’s Royalty Contest is sure to be one of the best ever!
Eligible contestants must be between 16 and 19 years of age and enrolled as a high school student as of July 4th, 2011. Contestants must be single men/women (never married) with no children, violated no laws, reside in the Ketchikan Gateway Borough and be an exemplary representative of our community. The King and Queen will be expected to reign over the 4th of July festivities, ride in the parade, and attend the Raffle Ticket Drawing on July 2nd. The King and Queen may also be called upon during the year of their reign for other community ceremonies and events where their presence would be beneficial.
