Fred Horne’s boat dragged anchor and broke up on an offshore reef in a bitter winter gale. Fred swam ashore in the dark, wearing only his underwear. He lived without shelter or fire in the near-zero weather until rescued, when he said, “I always wear heavy wool underclothing.
