Stamps View your Booklet Alaskan Trivia: In 1883 tourist excursions began visiting Glacier Bay. In 1899 an earthquake dropped tons of glacier in the the bay, blocking it off. In 1907 the steamship Spokane became the first ship to get back into the bay. During that trip the Spokane steamed to within a mile of the face of the Muir Glacier.
