Reporting on Suicide and Postvention training

When someone dies by suicide in our communities, the way we respond with our news coverage can inadvertently contribute to a suicide contagion phenomena. If we follow some research-informed best practices in our coverage and reporting, we can minimize further harm, and potentially promote healing and help prevent further tragedies. 

Eric Morrison is a former Juneau Empire reporter and has been the Statewide Suicide Prevention Council’s staffer since 2010. The council advises the Alaska Legislature and governor on suicide prevention, intervention and postvention. In that role, Eric has co-authored three 5-year Alaska Suicide Prevention Plans and the Alaska Postvention Guide. 

Eric will discuss the media’s role after a suicide, and best practices for reporting on suicide.
